Eight-time NBA All-star and four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Dikembe Mutombo has embarked on an effort to save live in his native Republic of Congo by helping to construct a 300-bed hospital in his birthplace.
Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo, most commonly known as Dikembe Mutombo, who originally came to the U.S. on an academic scholarship to study medicine at Georgetown University, has contributed some $15 million toward the $29 million cost of building the new 300-bed Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital and Research Center in the capital city of Kinshasa. At its opening, the hospital was the first new medical facility of its kind in the Congo in almost 40 years.
His foundation also supports the International Polio Victims Response Committee in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and he is personally involved with the NBA’s Basketball without Borders Africa initiative, the United for Children, Unite against AIDS campaign and CARE. Mutombo spends the off-season traveling throughout Africa on behalf of the NBA, performing at free basketball clinics for as many as 2,000 children per day.
Mutombo’s awards are numerous and include World Economic Form – Young Global Leader, Wilt Chamberlain Award – Operation Smile Honorary Degree, Doctor of Humane Letters – State University of NY/Cortland, NAACP Phoenix Award, The Henry Iba Citizen Athlete Award, The President’s Service Award (2002), J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award – NBA, Ernie Davis Humanitarian Award, The Samuel J. Halsey Award – Georgetown Univ., Constituency for Africa’s Trailblazer Award, ABC’s Person of the Week, Essence Magazine’s 2001 Achiever and Sporting News’ No. 1 Good Guy.
