NBA World Champion and Olympic gold medalist Steve Smith, who contributed $3.1 million to Michigan State University to help construct an academic center for student-athletes was inducted into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame along with Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Largent and National Baseball Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew as a part of the class of 2006.

After a highly successful collegiate basketball career as the Spartans’ all-time leading scorer with 2,263 points where he earned First Team All-American honors, Smith was selected by the Miami Heat as fifth overall pick in the 1991 NBA Draft.  Smith played for the Miami Heat through the 1994 season and has since played with the Atlanta Hawks (1994-1999), Portland Trail Blazers (1999-2001), San Antonio Spurs (2001 - 2003), where he won an NBA World Championship in 2003, New Orleans Hornets (2003 - 2004) and Charlotte Bobcats and Miami Heat (2004 - 2005).

Smith’s basketball ability was further recognized when he was selected to represent the U.S. at 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, where he helped the American squad win the gold medal.  Smith is currently the FSN television analyst for Atlanta Hawks games.

Through his contribution to MSU, Smith helped construct the Clara Bell Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center, in honor of his late mother, Clara Bell Smith, who lost her battle with cancer during his rookie NBA season. A portion of the contribution also funds The Steve Smith/Pershing High/MSU Scholarship for Academic Achievement to fully endow an academic scholarship providing high-achieving students from his Detroit high school with an opportunity to attend MSU.
