Tony Gwynn, one of the best hitters in baseball history and philanthropic catalyst to found charities in support of children in need, was inducted into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame as a part of the Class of 1999, which included football great Tom Landry and track and field star Wilma Rudolph.
Tony Gwynn played right field for 21 seasons with the San Diego Padres. During that time Gwynn amassed a huge collection of honors, earning 15 All-Star selections, five Gold Glove awards, seven Silver Slugger awards, and eight Batting Titles. Gwynn retired with a .388 career batting average, having led the league in base hits seven times. In 2007 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame with an incredible 97.6% of the vote, the seventh highest voting percentage in the history of the Hall of Fame.
Gwynn went on to found the Tony Gwynn foundation, an organization with the general aim of helping to fund charities which support children in need. He also hosts the Tony Gwynn Celebrity Golf Classic to raise money for his foundation. He is also actively involved in the Padres Scholarship Program, which annually offers college scholarships to 25 middle school athletes graduating from high school in good standing.
